Rex Merrill Bowers was born on December 18, 1920 in Burley, Cassia County, Idaho. He served in the Co. C, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He was killed in the Battle of the Bulge with eleven other men in his company as they struggled forward in deep snow under heavy and accurate German gunfire during the liberation of Weiswampach in northern Luxembourg. His daughter spearheaded the effort to construct the monument in Weiswampach. He is now buried in the Gem Memorial Gardens, Burley, Cassia County, Idaho, USA at the age of 24.
