Lt W.A. Solheim, a US pilot serving in the RAF (180 Squadron), took off in B-25 41-12571 (FL707) on a bombing run over the military construction works at Couville. Part of the second wave of bombers, Solheim’s plane was struck by an injured B-25 hit by flak and careening towards the ground. Solheim lost control of the plane and crashed as well.
He is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery (CWGC)- the Cherbourg Old Communal Cemetery in France.
