2nd Lt Robert R. Mericle, co-pilot of the B-17 42-5058 “Hun Hunter”, took off from station 105 in Chelveston, Nothamptonshire, UK at 0900 on a bombing mission over Saint Nazaire’s “Flak Alley” to target the submarine pens there. The plane was shot down by a German fighter and evacuated at 1112. The locals only saw one parachute but two crew members survived.
