1st Lt Herbert Waguette Stanford, pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt 42-26259, took off from A-7 Azeville on an armed reconnaissance over Vire. Arriving over their target at 0845 the group of 8 US fighters was ambushed by 25 German Messerschmitt fighters. Stanford was shot down at 0900. He managed to bail out from his flaming aircraft far too late, his body ending up 300m from the wreck. Although the Germans locked down the area, the locals gave him a burial. His grave was covered in the children’s flowers. Listed as MIA, his family only found out the circumstances of his death in 1998. He was reburied in Saint James cemetery at their request. He also has a cenotaph located in Lakeview Cemetery, Brockport, Monroe County, New York, USA.
