When Joseph R. Kane was born on June 18, 1925, in Ohio, his father, Urban, was 47 and his mother, Anna, was 37. He had one brother and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the 772d Bomber Squadron, 463rd Bomber Group (Heavy). He entered service in Ohio on August 31, 1943. Machine gunner of the B-17 Fortress, type G, serial number 44-6352 which took off from Celone, Italy on a mission to Valence, France. Shot down by the flak at 12:13 near Bourg-les-Valence. Of the nine crew members, four survived the crash and were taken prisoner. Kane was killed in the crash. He is now buried at Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA.
