James W. Tintera served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the 772d Bomber Squadron, 463rd Bomber Group (Heavy). He entered service in Illinois. Machine gunner of the B-17 Fortress, type G, with the serial number 44-6352 which took off from Celone, Italy on a mission to Valence, France. Shot down by the flak at 12:13 near Bourg-les-Valence. Of the nine crewmembers, four survived the crash and were taken prisoner. Tintera was killed in the crash. He is now buried at Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial, Draguignan, Departement du Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France.
