Comments:

Jack S. Mac Conkey enlisted with the Air Corps on 8 October 1943 at Worth, Missouri as a Technical Sergeant.

He attended Grant City High School at Grant Cityu, Missouri in 1940 F/O Mac Conkey was attacked by an FW-190 after which his ship burst into flames. According to Captain Harold J. Hoffman he had no chance to bail out.

Statement from Senior Flying Control Officer, Captain W.H. Rush, AAF Station F-122, APO No. 637
"On April 19,1944, at 0807 hours, Lt. Mc Conkey piloting aircraft YF-L, Took off from this field on an operational mission with the 358th Fighting Squadron. His call sign was Trooptrain 55. Lt. Mc Conkey was flying number two position in Yellow flight. When Lt. Mc Conkey failed to return to this base with the 338th Fighter Squadron, this office immediately notified combat operations and every effort was made to contact Lt. Mc Conkey".

F/O Mac Conkey was initially buried on 21 April 1944 on the cemetery of Eschwege.
