When Robert Lee Norman was born on February 8, 1921, in Georgia, his father, Grover, was 27 and his mother, Mattie, was 37. He had one brother. 1Lt Norman was assigned to the 357th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group in 1944. During his stay in this unit, he won 1 confirmed victory in aerial combat and destroyed two aircraft on ground in collaboration with two other pilots. He won his first victory against a Fw 190D during an escort mission to Berlin on March 8, 1944. On April 13, he participated in a mission of escort of bombers attacking the aerodromes of Lechfeld and Oberpfanffenhofen near Munich.

On April 24, 1944, Lieutenant Norman was killed in command of the P-51B (42-106433) OS R " Moon ". He was seen for the last time chasing a Me 109 through a B-17 formation. He could have been shot down by the defensive fire of the bombers.

He is now buried in Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-Avold, Departement de la Moselle, Lorraine, France. He also has a marker at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Moultrie, Colquitt County, Georgia, USA.
