When Gilbert L. Patterson was born on September 2, 1918, in Missouri, his father, Clive, was 29 and his mother, Maggie, was 26. He had one sister. 2Lt Patterson was assigned to the 354th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group in 1944. On 24 July, he took part in the attack on the Lechfeld and Landsberg airfields at 1200 hours. Twelve aircraft are destroyed on the ground and 11 damaged. Patterson destroys one of the aircraft. He was finally killed in action on 3 August 1944 at the command of P-51B (43-6885) WR X. He collided with Lieutenant Hoffman's aircraft.
