When Thomas F. Truel, Jr. was born on August 12, 1922, in Pennsylvania, his father, Thomas, was 28 and his mother, Ellen, was 26. He had three brothers and two sisters. He was assigned to the 354th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group in 1944/45. He was killed on 4 April 1945 at the helm of his P-51D (44-14228) WR P "Lady Barbara II" and crashed after not being able to escape from a Split S at low altitude during an engagement with Fw 190s over the Ludwigslut terrain. He is now buried in Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA.
