Woolard, from Richmond, was a P-51 pilot in the 354th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group, of the 8th Air Force. He shot down his first enemy fighter on 2 November 1944, but was himself shot down by flak near Berleburg, Germany on 16 November 1944. He escaped from Stalag Luft III with Major Charles Lenfest, also of 354FS/355FG on 17 April 1945. Woolard was hit and wounded near American lines by shrapnel to his stomach during an artillery barrage on 18 April 1945.

Taken to the 10th Field Hospital in Nurnberg on 19 April, he died of his wounds on the 20th. First buried at the US Military Cemetary at Bensheim, Germany, Woolard was removed to be re-buried in his home town on 11 July 1949.
