When John R. Ellington was born in May 1899 in Mississippi, his father, John, was 43 and his mother, Suesia, was 34. He had two brothers and six sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company I, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 19, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
