When Sheridan Cardwell was born in 1879 in Cave, Illinois, his father, Monterville, was 23 and his mother, Mary, was 19. He had one brother and four sisters. He was a farmer before entering the service. He enlisted in the Army in 1908 at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis. He was sent overseas on June 13, 1917 and was attached to Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Thompsonville, Franklin County, Illinois, USA.
