When Russell Clarkson Hand was born on March 1, 1874, in Yankton, South Dakota, his father, James, was 28 and his mother, Clara, was 27. He married Charlotte L Fancher in August 1904 in Parker, South Dakota. They had two children during their marriage. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 21, 1918 and is now buried in Aisne-Marne American Cem., Belleau, France.
