B-24 (42-50603) Crash Memorial -Operation Carpetbagger
Details:
On the E side of the D570, just S of its intersection with the Rue de Lebeuville.
A vertical slab of brown rock set on a small gravel plot and bearing a white inscription commemorating the aircrew of the B-24 that crashed in the area during WWII as part of Operation Carpetbagger; B-24 (42-50603) was piloted by 1st Lt. James M. McLaughlin of the 858th Bomber Squadron, 492nd Bomb Group.
Operation CARPETBAGGER was a series of secret missions in which several specially designated bomb groups dropped supplies, arms, equipment, leaflets, and U.S. Office of Strategic Services and French agents to resistance groups operating in France.
