Lost Battalion Marker -WW1
Details:
The memorial is a stone marker dedicated to the Lost Battalion. It is located on the south side of the road D66/Charleveaux. Across the road from the site is metal fencing.
The marker is in remembrance of the Lost Battalion. The market is stone with black text in English. The marker has a gravel base.
On October 1st, 1918 the 77th Division was pursued by Germans about a half mile away from the marker.
On October 2nd the 77th Division began a failed attempt to capture a nearby bridge. Six companies of the 308th were ordered to carry on and advanced deeply behind unoccupied enemy lines. The companies set up camp atop a slope. During the night after the companies set up camp, the Germans cut off the battalion's access to the bottom of the slope. For 5 days and nights, the battalion was peppered by enemy fire.
Despite the Americans having the uphill advantage, the battalion faced a grave issue of water shortage. The only source of water was from the creek at the bottom of the valley, near the Germans.
Eventually the American troops were relieved; however, among the initial 550 men, 107 were killed, with only 194 who remained unscathed.
