51st Engineer Combat Battalion Plaque

<< Back to Trois-Ponts Roadside

Details:

This plaque is located on the northern end of a small stone bridge that is situated north of the town center. If you are traveling north from the center of Trois-Ponts, this will be the second small bridge which you cross. Additionally, the bridge is located slightly north of the Trois-Ponts town hall. Plaque This dark metal plaque describes the valiant accomplishments of Company C of the 51st Engineer Combat Battalion during its combat against German armored units. The plaque also recognizes the help of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Company C was sent to Trois-Ponts on December 17, 1944, to prepare the town's bridges for demolition in order to halt a further German advance. This action forced the German forces in the area to move north in the direction of Stoumont. Soldiers from he 82nd Airborne Division arrived on December 20, 1944. Company C repaired one of the bridges which they had previously destroyed to allow these soldiers to cross, then destroyed it again to ensure that it would not fall into enemy hands.
