LTC Bill Bailey Plaque -704th Tank Destroyer Battalion
Details:
The plaque is hanging on the outside wall of the left door of the shop.
A dark blue, rectangle plaque which commemorates LTC Bailey who was killed during the liberation of the town.
In September 1944, the Battle of Lorraine begins. The Americans advance quickly and arrive in Lunéville.
The 704th Tank Destroyer Battalion, accompanied by the 37th Tank Battalion, face the German panzers. Unlike the Germans, American tank units are not used to fighting in urban areas.
Enemy forces move behind the railway line facing the crossroads to cover all roads. Suddenly, at 12h00, a Jeep arrives at the bottom of the rue de Viller, with Colonel Bailey on board, commander of the 704th TDB, and his sergeant. He drives very quickly through the intersection in the open field of enemy fire. He then turns right in front of where the American tanks are positioned. The colonel then raises his hand and extends his finger to give orders to Captain Tanner, who commands one of the companies of the 704th. At this same moment a mortar shell explodes. Though his sergeant survives, Colonel Bailey is killed by shrapnel.
