Plaque

A brass inscribed plaque about 2.5 ft by 2 ft.

The plaque marks the location of the base (596m) of a Tramway built by the  126th Engineer Battalion, 10thMountain Division to support the 86th Infantry Regiment assault on Riva Ridge and Monte Cappel Buso (1100m).

From the Linea Gotica website: Just before the attack on the Monti della Riva, or Riva Ridge, the American mountain troops of B Company, 1st Battalion, 86th Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, sheltered in the homes of the families of the hamlet of Ca di Julio and at Pianacci. On the night of 18 February 1945, the soldiers began the long climb up the steep path to Monte Cappel Buso, guided by local people, some of them former partisans. The summit of Monte Cappel Buso was taken immediately.

A plaque was installed in the private garden overlooking the hamlet (Ca di Julio) in 2001 to commemorate D Company, 126th Battalion of Mountain Engineers, 10th Mountain Division, who worked from 19 to 21 February 1945 to build the aerial cableway used to send up weapons, supplies and ammunition to the troops fighting on the ridge, and to bring down the dead and injured, The conquest of Riva Ridge opened the way for the attack on Monte Belvedere.

Map (see pictures): Base of Riva Ridge - Ca di Julio (Farnè) - Cappel Buso trail (CoB) - the thick line shows the tramway spanning the Dardagna river valley.

Thanks to Elio Pasquali, a resident devoted to remembering the 10th Mountain Division and the Second World War in these mountains, for assistance with this memorial.
