The monument memorializes the many people, including
American pilot CPT Edward K. Simpson (364th Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group), killed during the attack on the maquis by
the Germans on August 14, 1944, and of the various actions carried out for the
liberation of the territory by the maquisards.
