Operation Frantic Memorial
Details:
On the west side of the park.
A vertical rectangular granite stone standing on a granite stone base inscribed in Ukrainian and English text, incised in white lettering. The monument is affixed on a large stone formation with an airplane propeller sitting on the top of the stone formation, on the left side of the monument.
The memorial was opened in 1994, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Operation Frantic. Although a significant event for Poltava, this WWII episode is not very well-known. Operation Frantic was a series of seven shuttle bombing operations during World War II conducted by American aircraft based in Great Britain and southern Italy which then landed at three Soviet airfields in Ukraine. The aircraft in the Ukraine then flew bombing missions en route to their bases in Italy and Great Britain. The operation ran between June and September, 1944.
