493rd Bomber Group (H) Plaque & Town Sign
Details:
On the east side of the road, at the base of the village name sign.
A bronze plaque inscribed in English text and high relief which features a B24 Liberator and a B17 Flying Fortress, both of which flew from Debach as part of the 8th United States Army Air Force's strategic bombing campaign of Nazi Germany. The Airfield opened in April 1944 and the last mission, an attack on marshalling yards at Nauen, Germany, took place on 20 April 1945. Part of one of the runways still exists and there is a museum run by local volunteers.
