On April 23, 1945, B-17 Dottie Jean (43-38856), piloted by Captain Charles Ackerman of the 534thBomber Squadron, 381st Bomber Group, departed Ridgewell Airfield with a crew and passengers (31 service members)  destined to attend President Franklin Roosevelts funeral.  The plane was enroute to a base  (Nutts Corner) on Northern Ireland.

The aircraft was on course flying in low cloud when it crossed the coast of the Isle of Man.  Shortly after the aircraft passed over Glen Mona and Corrany before flying into the steep southern slope of North Barrule about 200ft short of the summit of the hill.  The aircraft disintegrated with most of the airframe being consumed by fire.  The crash killed all 31 crew and passengers on the aircraft.

Every year the American flag is flown there in a ceremony to honor the men.
