B-24 “War Bride” (42-52196) Crash Site Memorial
Details:
On a rock just below the peak.
A brass inscribed plaque attached to a rock about two feet off the ground.
On September 9, 1944, B-24 “War Bride” (42-52196 ) of the 734th Bomber Squadron, 453rd Bomber Group flying from Leuchars (Operation Carpetbagger), Scotland was on an “Operation Ball” mission to resupply Norwegian Resistance fighters at the Crupper 5 rendezvous point. The plane came too low and crashed right under the top of the mountain Skorve near Seljord, Norway (At a place called Langjefellhaddin). The cause of the accident is believed to be icing on the plane. All 11 crewmembers were killed.
At first the crew were buried near the crash site. After the war, in 1950, they were brought back to USA and buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri (SECTION 78 SITE 965-967).

Monument Text:
The text includes a poem in Norwegian and reads:
9. september 1944 styrta eit amerikansk fly på veg til Hønefosstraktene. Flyet hadde med forsyninger til heimestyrkane."
Followed by the poem: "Kvil i fred i Noregs jord. Kvili fred der lyngen gror. Kvil i fred i mosamyr. Kvil i fred til dagen gryr."
The translation is:
On September 9, 1944 an American plane crashed while training to resupply Norwegian Forces in the Hønefos area.
Poem:
"Rest in peace in Norway's soil. Rest in peace where heather grows. Rest in peace in moss and marsh. Rest in peace until the Day dawns."
