SHAEF Memorial
Details:
On the southeast, a few meters away from the USAAF HQ memorial.
A star symbol containing the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) insignia in relief and a rectangular metal plaque below it, both set on a brick pavement. The plaque is inscribed in English in raised lettering and is dedicated to General Eisenhower's time stationed in Bushy Park. The memorial marks the spot where the office of SHAEF was stood. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was in command of SHAEF. He moved SHAEF from Grosvenor Square in London to Camp Griffiss on March 5, 1944. Here he planned Operation Overlord, the code name of the D-Day landings in Normandy. On June 2, 1944, the advance headquarters moved to Portsmouth and the landings took place on 6 June.
