Gustaaf-Octaaf Desmet was born on 14 October 1889 in Ingooigem (Ingoyghem), Belgium. He later immigrated to the US and settled in Michigan.
He enlisted in the US Army during World War 1 and served in the Headquarters of the 4th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division. It is believed he was wounded during the Battle of the Meuse Argonne and later died in hospital on October 23, 1918.
After the war his family requested his body be buried in his home cemetery in Belgium.
