Three P-47 Pilots Plaque -406th Fighter Group

<< Back to Mogues

Details:

Under the tree of liberty.

Plaque

A thick, rectangular, stone tablet, set on the ground that is inscribed in French in engraved lettering. The plaque commemorates 2Lt Armstrong, pilot of the P-47D #42-29179, 2Lt Harkinson (P-47D #42-28918), and 1Lt Douglas (P-47D #44-19712). These 3 pilots crashed in the town on the same day December 2, 1944. That day, the three American planes on a mission crashed at Mont Mollet, the highest point in the sector with its 355 meters above sea level, and at a place called Le Petit Vin, on the edge of the town of Williers. The three pilots were killed in this air disaster due to flying at too low an altitude and in fog.
