Second Lieutenant Gilbert A. “Gill” Malrait was born in Rhode Island in 1919 to Belgian immigrant parents. His family moved back to Belgium where Gill attended high school. At the onset of World War 2, he returned to the US and trained a B-24 bomber navigator.
Gill was assigned to the 719th Bomber Squadron, 449th Bomber Group of the 15th Air force where he flew missions out of North Africa and Italy. On April 4, 1944, on about his 20th mission, Malrait's plane was shot down during a mission over Romania and he was KIA. At the request of his family, he was buried at the family cemetery in Ronse, Belgium in 1950.
