Details:

In the civilian section of the cemetery just of the Grande Allee path.

Isolated Burial

A large light slightly above ground horizontal grave with an inscription on top and in the front.

Alexander Heingartner was born in New York in 1857 and grew up in Canton, Ohio.  Under the McKinley Presidential Administration he began a career as a US Diplomat.  He served initially in Catania, Italy, later in Russia (Riga and Batum), and, in 1911 was assigned to serve as the Consul in Liege, Belgium.

He continued to serve Consul in Liège during World War I and he died at post during the war. Although he did not serve in the armed forces, he played a critical role in the Commission for Relief in Belgium during World War I; the Chairman for the Commission was the then future President Herbert Hoover.  We remember him as a tribute to the civilians who died in service to their country.
