Details:
Next to the cave entrance of the Partisan Hospital Museum (Partizanska bolnica Bela).
A marble inscribed plaque attached to a rock wall.
The plaque remembers the American pilot 2LT Otto Hinds (353rd Bomber Squadron, 301st Bomber Group) who was treated at this Partisan hospital for several weeks in 1944. 2LT Hinds subsequently died from his injuries suffered after parachuting out his crippled B-17 (42-97580), known locally as “Liberty Bell”. According to reports, 2LT Hinds, the plane Co-Pilot, kept the plane under control after being hit allowing most of the crew to bail out. After the crew bailed out Hinds attempted to depart but his chute only partially opened. He broke his back upon landing and local Partisans took him to a Partisan Hospital “Bella” (Partizanska bolnica Bela). , Hinds died and the Partisans buried him with honors nearby.
A nearby plaque also remembers Hinds temporary burial site. The entire crew of the B-17 is remembered at nearby Site Žaga, B-17 42-97580 (Liberty Bell) Crash Site Memorial.
