2d Marine Division Plaque

Details:

Northern side of the wall on the waterfront of Frank Kitts Park, Jervois Quay, Wellington, New Zealand. Plaque Two plaques commemorating the arrival of the 2d Marine Division following initial combat on Guadalcanal in May 1942.  The Division would have all units in camps throughout New Zealand by 1 March 1943 for ongoing training, recuperation and reception of replacements.  In Follow Me! The Story of the Second Marine Division in World War II, Richard Johnston wrote, "It is doubtful that any alien troops ever received a warmer and more sincerely friendly welcome than the Second Marine Division got in New Zealand."  


 From New Zealand the Marines would assault the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilberts in November 1943.
