A dark gray inscribed upright civilian headstone.

 

Private Markus Juul Hansen, also know as Marcus Hanson, was born in Denmark in 1890 and immigrated to the US in 1912 and settled in Minnesota.  He entered service in the US army in June 1917 and served in the 603rd Engineers.  During the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in November 1918, the 603rd Engineers supported the 89th Infantry Division.  On November 9, 1918 Markus was slightly wounded while constructing a pontoon bridge.  He was ordered to the rear for treatment and while enroute, his ambulance was hit by artillery fire and Markus was killed.

 

In 1921 his body was transferred to his place of birth in the Hørby Church cemetery in Denmark. He is buried under a civilian headstone next to his mother.
