CPL Eckhoff and PFC Lawson Monument

Details:

On the east side of Rue du Gros Jacques.

Monument

A low obelisk monument that bears a commemorative plaque in honor of Frederick T. Eckhoff and PFC Lucious R. Lawson. The commune of St-Lubin-des-Joncherets was liberated on the night of August 20-21, 1944 by the 1st Battalion of the 120th Infantry Regiment of the 30th "Old Hickory" Division.

But the joy of newfound freedom was overshadowed by a tragic event. During the offensive, two American soldiers were killed when their jeep overran a mine. To see further stories about this event, you can visit the Division’s website: http://30thinfantrydivision.free.fr/Guerre2/Civils/ado.htm.

Every year, on August 21st, a ceremony is held to honor the memory of these two American heroes, and also to celebrate the liberation of Saint-Lubin. The monument to our American liberators, erected in the 1950s, originally stood in the middle of Charles Renard Hill, where the tragedy took place. For safety reasons, it has been moved here.
