The plaque remembers the role that the Swanage Railway played in transporting US Army soldiers to their embarkation points which ultimately led to Omaha Beach during the Normandy Landings. Soldiers of the 26th Infantry Regiment of the First Infantry "Bir Red One" we stationed in Swanage in 1943-44.

80th ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY 1944
TO COMMEMORATE THE ROLE PLAYED BY THE SWANAGE RAILWAY IN TRANSPORTING AMERICAN SOLDIERS FROM THE THE FIRST INFANTRY DIVISION'S 26TH INFANTRY REGIMENT BETWEEN NOVEMBER 1943 TO APRIL1944, BILLETED IN SWANAGE WHILE TRAINING FOR D-DAY ON JUNE 6, 1944.
THE SOLDIERS LEFT THIS STATION IN APRIL 1944, BOUND FOR OMAHA BEACH IN NORMANDY WHERE MANY DIED DURING THE ASSAULT.
