Plaque
A rectangular black plaque written in French in gold lettering honoring Peter Andersen.
The liberation of Treffendel began in June 1944. On August 3, 1944, American soldier Peter Andersen, a liaison officer returning from a mission in Mordelles, was about to rejoin his unit in Plélan-le-Grand. On his way back, he was ambushed by the Germans at a place called "La Nouvelle Victoire". His body was initially hidden by the Germans, who feared reprisals from the Allies. Then the Germans fled. The soldier's remains were taken to Treffendel town hall the following day for burial two days later, before being repatriated to the United States in the following months.
