Affixed on the left side of the wall behind the monument.

Plaque

Three rectangular white plaques commemorating the 5th US Infantry Division as well as Pvt Kulawski and PVt Langlois. The upper plaque is inscribed in red lettering while the lower plaques are inscribed in gold and incised lettering. 

 

On August 21, 1944, Allied forces advanced after D-Day, Malesherbois, a strategic route to Fontainebleau and Montereau, was heavily defended by two German battalions with 88-mm guns. American Companies I and K faced strong resistance but managed to capture the German artillery and clear mines from the road. Despite one of the captured guns exploding, the Americans defused the other in time. Pvt Kulakowski and Pvt Langlois were one of the casualties on that day.
