Monument
A small monument built from stones features a bronze plaque inscribed in French and topped with the insignia of the World War II US Medical Research Center. This monument honors the American medical staff who were the first to arrive directly from the United States to France, landing in Cherbourg on September 24, 1944. The 164th General Hospital began setting up a field hospital in the Bolleville area from October 5 to 22, 1944, under the leadership of Major Philip H. Livingston, who was appointed Chief of Medical Service. The hospital, equipped with 1,200 beds, was fully operational from October 22, 1944, to May 26, 1945. The memorial is erected where the hospital once stood, honoring the medical staff and their contributions to the war effort. This connection to the historical site ensures that the memory of their service is preserved in its original context. The monument was unveiled on June 4, 2012, by sisters Dorothy and Ellen Levitsky, nurses at the 164th General Hospital, and was initiated by the C-47 Club "Normandy Chapter" with the support and agreement of Bolleville's elected officials and residents.
The 164th General Hospital's operations in Bolleville were vital to the Allied war effort. The hospital staff, which included doctors, nurses, and support personnel, worked tirelessly to treat a wide range of injuries, from battle wounds to disease. The hospital's location in Bolleville allowed it to serve as a crucial medical hub during the Allied advance through France and into Germany.
The presence of the 164th General Hospital in Bolleville not only contributed to the military success of the Allies but also fostered strong relationships between the American medical staff and the local French population. The hospital's operations provided a lifeline to countless soldiers and exemplified the humanitarian side of the war effort.
