Monument

A stone monument with a rectangular bronze plaque displays the insignia of the 83rd Infantry Division in the top left corner, followed by a brief commemorative message. The monument honors the 83rd and 4th US Infantry Divisions, which liberated Sainteny in July 1944. The text is written in French.

The divisions participated in the Battle of Sainteny, which took place in July 1944 during the broader Battle of Normandy in World War II. The 83rd U.S. Infantry Division and the 4th U.S. Infantry Division were involved in this battle as part of the Allied offensive to liberate northern France from German occupation. Despite fierce resistance from entrenched German forces, including Waffen SS units, and significant casualties, the American forces succeeded in capturing Sainteny after several days of hard-fought combat. This battle is a key part of the larger push following the D-Day landings.
