By August 1944, American forces, including the 3rd Army under General Patton, were moving rapidly through the region. After intense fighting and heavy resistance from retreating German forces, Bonnétable was freed on August 10, 1944. The liberation of towns like Bonnétable was a significant step in the overall Allied effort to push the Germans out of France and bring an end to the occupation.
