Plaque

A rectangular blue plaque with a metal stand commemorating the soldiers of the 3rd and 75th Infantry Divisions who liberated the town during the Battle of the Colmar Pocket, which took place between December 1944 and February 1945. The plaque has the insignias of the divisions and is written in French and English.

The liberation of Andolsheim on February 1, 1945, was part of the larger Colmar Pocket campaign during World War II. This operation was crucial for clearing the last German-held area on French soil in Alsace. The 3rd U.S. Infantry Division and the 75th Infantry Division played a pivotal role under the overall command of the 1st French Army. Together, they broke through German defenses, liberating Andolsheim and surrounding towns. The operation culminated in the closing of the Colmar Pocket, forcing the retreat of the German 19th Army. This victory secured Alsace for the Allies and marked the end of significant German resistance in the region.
