Monument
A stone monument commemorating the American soldiers who died during the Battle of Normandy. The monument is written in French.
On June 22, 1944, the 3rd Battalion of the 12th Infantry Regiment (4th Infantry Division) faced significant challenges near Digosville. Their attack was slowed by stiff German resistance, and during a bayonet charge, the battalion’s commander, Lieutenant Colonel Thaddeus Dulin, was killed. The battalion became temporarily isolated from the main force until reinforcements arrived on June 23. The slow and costly progress through Digosville was part of the Allies' efforts to reach Cherbourg, which they finally captured by June 29, 1944.
The intense combat around Digosville and nearby areas exemplified the difficulties faced by American troops in the hedgerow terrain, where German defenses turned every village into a stronghold. The loss of life here reflects both the strategic importance of the operation and the tough conditions of the Normandy campaign.
