The Isolated Burial of 1LT Jack D. Hodge. 1LT Hodge served in the 83rd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group. On March 11, 1945, he was on a mission in P-51 (44-15627) "Windy City Mama" to escort bombers on a mission to Hamburg. Over the coast of Denmark his plane developed a mechanical issue and he crashed near Ă˜ster Starup, Denmark. He was buried in the town church cemetery two days later and after the war his mother decided to leave him buried at this location.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions in previous bomber escort missions.
