Monument
An upright stone monument honoring soldiers of the 35th Infantry Division, known as "Santa Fe," who fell on July 30, 1944. It features the division's insignia and bears inscriptions in both English and French.
On July 30, 1944, the U.S. 35th Infantry Division advanced south from Saint-Lô and faced intense German resistance. Task Force S—made up of infantry, tanks, engineers, and reconnaissance elements—spearheaded the assault, moving through the area near Les Fontaines and capturing key positions along the Vire River. Despite facing heavy fire from machine guns, mortars, and artillery, the division broke through German defenses and successfully liberated the town.
