Monument
A rough-hewn stone monument, inscribed in French, honors the U.S. 4th Armored Division, led by Major General John S. Wood, for liberating Coutances on July 28, 1944.
On July 28, 1944, as part of a rapid advance, Combat Command B spearheaded the assault against German paratroopers and SS forces. Despite fierce resistance, the enemy retreated, and American troops entered the town. General Wood personally led the operation under fire, and by nightfall, the division had secured a vital bridge and positioned itself for the next phase of the advance.
