A long metallic painted road sign placed along the edge attached to the pedestrian rail.
The bridge is named in honor of Captain Fred A. Hancock of Commander of C Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.
During Operation Market Garden the 101st Airborne was unaware that this bridge spanned the the Dommel. Captain Hancock took advantage changed is attack plans and led his company to take the "Surprise" bridge and liberated the town on September 17, 1944.
The memorial was dedicated on the 80th Anniversary in September 2024.
