Mosel Crossing/Battle of Dornot-Corny Historic Walk

In the recreation area adjacent to the 5th Division Monument and mural. This historic walk (Parcour's Historique) is a continuation of the Dornot historic walk across the river.


Commemorative Object

A series of numerous information signs recounting the September 1944 crossing of the Mosel River at this point by the 11th Infantry Regiment of the 5th "Red Diamond" Infantry Division, supported by the 7th Armored Divsion; the local battle which ensued in Corny-Dornot; and, the Battle for Metz which concluded in November 1944.  The information signs are written in French, German, and English.  They included detailed maps, historic perspective, and person anecdotes from participants in the battle.

The series of information signs provide information on the following topics:  
-Background up to the River crossing;
-The River Crossing
-The battle in the heights above the crossing;
-Enemy counterattack
-Battle for the nearby forts
-The Battle for Metz

One information sign also provides background about LT Jack Kirby, an Officer in the 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division who was a famous American comic book artist and how the battle impacted his characters and drawing.  He was involved in the development of many notable Superhero characters include: Captain America; Ant-Man; Avengers; Black Panther; Hulk; Ironman; and X-Men to name a few for Marvel and DC Comics.
