Tadeusz Kościuszko was born in February 1746 in a manor house on the Mieračoŭščyna Estate (Belarusian: Мерачоўшчына), located near Kosava in present-day southwestern Belarus. Originally part of the Brest-Litovsk Voivodeship within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania under the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the estate’s territory has changed hands over time, falling under the control of Poland, the Russian Empire, Germany, and the Soviet Union.
The original manor was destroyed in 1944 by Soviet partisans during World War II. It was later reconstructed between 2003 and 2004 on its original 18th-century foundation, with the support of local authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Minsk, guided by historical photographs and drawings. Today, the restored manor serves as a museum, featuring artifacts related to Kościuszko’s life, traditional furnishings, and memorabilia from international visitors, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Kościuszko family.
