The monument remembers members of the aircrew of the B-24 ((42-51967) 'Strange Cargo' of the 826th Bomber Squadron, 484th Bromber Group that we exectuted after the plane ws shot down.
This crew on their 15th mission against the enemy, flying from Torrette Airfiled in South Italy, was hit by anti-aircraft fire during a bombing raid over Graz, Austria. After having parachuted safely to the ground, four crew mates would be paraded before crowds of civilians and then shot to death. They were victims of Fliegerlynchjustiz "lynch justice for fliers" a campaign ordered by the Nazi high command that historians are only now bringing to light. They were buried in Central Cemetery, Braz, Austria, later to be reinterred some to their homes in America of US Overseas Military cemeteries; the Missing in Action are remembered on the Tablets of the Missing at the Florence American Memorial and Cemtery in Italy.
