OSS Operation Percy Pink DZ 'La Roche' Memorial

Located at the intersection of two gravel roads along the Percy Pink historic path.

The memorial consisites of an inforamtion sign and a metal marker indicating the drop zone.

 

The memorial remembers Operation Percy Pink which was an Office of Strategic Services (OSS) by Operational Group Pat lead by 1st LT Thomas A. Legare with the mission to work the Maquis (French Resistance) in the Dordogne Department, as well as the British Special Operation Executive (SOE) in August 1944. This memorial marks the drop zone for the team known as 'La Roche'.  Operation Carpetbagger delivered the team and supplies.

The text on the information sign is written in French and English.  The English reads:

'LA ROCHE DROP ZONE

(Zone just behind you)

Thirteen parachutists and 51 containers from the Operation Group "Percy Pink" belongiong to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) were dropped by three B-24 "Liberator" aircradt on August 12, 1944 were dropped at "La Roche" near Cadouin. The crews of the B-24 were Sandberg, Ward and Wilson.

The "Percy Pink" Operational Group was one of 21 Operational Groups dropped in France.

US Army Group Commander 1st LT Thomas Allen Legare's mission was to support the Local Resistance. The reception committee consisted of Local Resistance Leaders and British secret agents Peter Lake, Code named "Jean Pierre" and Ralph Beauclerk, codenamed "Casmir" from the "Digger" Group belonging to the British agency "Special Operation Executive" (SOE). During operations in the South-West, the Resistance Fighter Loen Robert from Luxembourg, acted as intrepreter for the "percy Pink commando.
