StatueIn July 1989, U.S. President George H. W. Bush became the first sitting American president to visit Budapest, where he delivered historic speeches supporting Hungarys transition from communism to democracy. Speaking in Kossuth Square and at Karl Marx University, he praised Hungary for leading the way with reforms such as removing the barbed wire border with Austria, and pledged U.S. backing through a $25 million enterprise fund, cultural initiatives, and trade incentives, including Most-Favored-Nation status. His visit symbolized American commitment to Hungarys democratic future at a crucial turning point in the Cold War. In recognition of his role, Hungary unveiled a bronze statue of Bush in Liberty Square in 2020, honoring his contributions to Hungarys freedom and democratic transition.
